Today our club men travelled to Dungarvan in Co. Waterford for the CycleSport GP. On the morning of the event riders awoke to gale force conditions, undeterred by the adverse weather conditions our club men loaded up their bikes and equipment and headed for The Crystal County. On the journey up the rain abated though the strong gale conditions prevailed. On the day we had Edward “The Rock” Casey, Peter Clendennen, Flor O’Mahony, and Brendan O’Sullivan taking part in the A3 race and Mike O’Shea in the A4 race. The 35km course which incorporated an arduous 3km climb was very open with no where to hide from the stormy conditions there was much movement within the peleton in both races for protection from the wind.
The A3’s had three laps of the circuit to complete and a substantially large group in excess of 100 riders took to the start line. The racing commenced from the line with the Junior riders putting in a number of aggressive attacks. Our Killorglin men rode to the fore and were in the thick of the action from the start covering any moves that went. Flor O’Mahony a recently coming into form rider rode very well throughout the day and got into one of the decisive moves bridging the gap across to the breakaways. In the end Flor finished very well on the day up in the first 25 riders. Edward and Peter finish comfortably in the bunch on the 3km climb to the finish.
The A4’s had two laps to complete on the tough circuit it was a real test of the legs circuit with hills, headwinds, crosswinds and a fast back section where riders reached speeds in excess of 60km/h. On the day Mike our reigning Hamper Ride Champion rode very well and was commended by his comrade’s on his determination and aggressive racing style he spent a portion of the race up the road, in the end it was a gallop for placings amongst the strongest riders on the day and credit due to Mike he was in the thick of the action finishing within the first fifteen placings!
